THE WORKBENCH / REPLACEMENT GUIDE

How to replace a casement window operator

Start by identifying the complete mechanism. A new handle will not fix every worn operator, and a similar-looking arm may use a different attachment.

This is a preparation and replacement overview. Release clips, trim access and fastening differ by model; use the instructions supplied for your exact window.

Before you start

Have the matched replacement, its installation instructions, a screwdriver that fits the fasteners, a tape measure and a place to keep the original hardware.

Identify the replacement first →
  1. Identify before removing

Photograph the complete arm assembly and mounting. Record the maker and any stamps. Use the identifier to compare arm length, link offset, handedness and spline with the supplier drawing.

  2. Open and secure the sash

Unlock the window and open it only far enough to reach the operator attachment. Keep the sash controlled while the linkage is disconnected. Stop if the sash or hinges are loose or damaged.

  3. Remove the handle and expose the base

Follow your model’s instructions for the handle and cover. A set screw, removable cover or wood trim may hide the mounting fasteners. Keep reusable screws organized; do not force a cover or trim that will not release.

  4. Disconnect the operator arm

Follow the specified release procedure for your track or clip. Some arms slide out through a track opening; other linkages have a retaining clip. Do not pry the connection apart without identifying the release.

  5. Swap the mechanism

Remove the operator mounting screws and lift out the old assembly. Compare old and new parts before mounting the replacement. Use the fasteners and mounting sequence specified by the manufacturer, then reconnect the arm and refit the cover and handle.

  6. Test the travel

Move the sash through its travel slowly, then close and lock it. If it binds, stop and recheck the arm connection, track and mounting. Do not use the crank to force a misaligned sash shut.
